POMEROY, Ohio — Devon Sharp scored from 37 yards out with 3:05 remaining to left the Athens Bulldogs to a nail biting 33-27 win over Meigs in TVC football action Friday night at Bob Robert Field in Pomeroy. Sharp — a 5-foot-8, 150-pound junior — rushed 19 times for 238 yards and scored on runs of 78, 32 and 37 yards to lead the Bulldogs over the fired up Marauders.

Meigs played without the services of senior co-captain quarterback/safety Cameron Bolin who sat out with an injury. But speedy sophomore Dillon Boyer stepped in for Meigs and almost led them to the win.

The Marauders received the opening kickoff and put together an 11play, 62 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead with 7:01 remaining in the first period. With Meigs facing a fourth and six from the Bulldog 11 yard line, Boyer was flushed out of the pocket and scored from 11 yards out. Christian Mugrage added the extra points.

It took the Bulldogs just five plays to drive 57 yards and tie the ball game at 7-all. Trey Harris hooked up with Ian Dixon from 1 yard out for the score. Noah Alassaf added the extra points to tie the game.

Meigs took a 14-7 lead at the end of the period when Charlie Barrett scored from a yard out, capping off an 8 play 70 yard drive. The score was set up by a 45 yard pass from Boyer to Jeffrey Roush to the Bulldog nine.

It took just four plays for Athens to answer when Sharp scored on a 78yard run, the extra points was no good but the Bulldogs had pulled to within 14-13 with 10:05 remaining.

The Marauders was driving and received a bad break when they fumbled at the Bulldog 11 yard line, Chris Norris recovered for Athens. Four plays later Harris hooked up with Dixon, this time from 59 yards out for the touchdown. Harris added the extra points at the 7:18 mark to give the visitors a 21-14 lead.

But back came the Marauders and scored when Barrett dove in from a yard out with 2:34 left, Mugrage was true on the extra points and the half ended with the game tied at 21-all.

After a scoreless third period, the Bulldogs went on top when Sharp added a 32 yard run, the kick was blocked but Athens was on top 27-21 with 10:17 left.

But back came, the maroon and gold to tie the game at 27 with 4:17 left in the contest when Barrett scored from five yard out. That score was set up with Boyer hooked up with Zach Sayre for a 37 yard gain to the Bulldog 15 on a third and 24.

But Sharp scored the go ahead touchdown when he went 37 yards around right end with 3:05 left in the contest.

Meigs was able to drive to their 45 and have a first down, but three straight sacks of Boyer and a fourth down pass that fell incomplete ended the game.

“The kids played their hearts out,” Meigs coach Mike Chancey said after the contest. “I’m very proud of they way the kids fought tooth and nail especially with our starting quarterback (Bolin) out. But everybody stepped up; Dillon Boyer did an excellent job making plays tonight.”

Sharp led the Bulldogs with 238 yards in 19 tries; Chris Russell added 29 in three carries. Harris was three of seven in the air for 82 yards; Ian Dixon caught two for 71 yards.

Jeffrey Roush once again paced Meigs with 152 yards in 26 tries, Barrett added 40 in 10, and Sayre 37 in six. Boyer was eight off 11 in the air for 186 yards, Sayre caught three for 89 yards, Colton Stewart three for 52 and Roush one for 45.

Athens is now 3-3 on the season, with their third win in a row, Meigs drops to 2-4, and they will travel to Buchtel to play Nelsonville-York next Friday.
