I have just heard the shocking news of the Gallipolis City School District telling Coach Jim Osborne that he will no longer be returning as a coach at Gallia Academy High School. This is very disturbing as he has put forth so much work, time and poured his heart into the GAHS athletic program.
As an alumnus, I knew Coach Osborne, he was a coach you could look up to and with very many awards to prove his status as a mentor. GAHS staff gave the news to Osborne in March. Osborne was told that “we,” as in GAHS, were going in a different direction.
I guarantee if you took a poll with the students and teachers at GAHS, the decision of “going in a different direction” and not hiring back Osborne would not be the decision of 90 percent of the staff and students. A “thanks” was not even given when the news was delivered to Osborne.
From the words of former University of Rio Grande Basketball Coach Earl Thomas, “I will always remember him as a first-class coach, but most of all, as a first-class individual.”
Those words describe coach Osborne very well. Why would GAHS come to the conclusion that they want to “go in another direction?”
