The Board of Elections held its bi-annual restructuring meeting last week. Representing the Republican Party are Daniel P. Davies, Jr., who has two more years left in his term, and newly reappointed member Carol M. Cremeans. Representing the Democratic party are Chairperson Robert E. Jenkins, who’s term ends in 2012, and Burnett.
Jeffrey A. Halley and Dale Whitt were also reappointed as director and deputy director, respectively. Halley has served as director since 1996, while Whitt has served as deputy director since 2008.
Board members are appointed by the Secretary of State after being recommended by their respective parties and the director and deputy director are appointed by the board members.
The board of elections is governed by Ohio Revised Code section 3501.
According to Halley, all of the Gallia County candidates have been certified and the final date for someone to file for the primary as an Independent is May 3 at 4 p.m.
To date, all local candidates are running unopposed with the exception of the Republican race for the Gallia County Commissioner’s seat. Harold G. Montgomery and David K. Smith, both former commissioners, will face off in the May 4 primary to represent their party.
The other candidates are: Larry M. Betz (R), auditor; D. Dean Evans (R), Common Pleas Judge; Floyd E. Wright (D), state central committee; Darla Saunders (D), auditor; and Jason L. Sherrill (D), county commissioner.

In the primary race for Gallia County Republican Central Committee, both Steven R. Betz and Virginia Ann Daniels have filed for the Centerville precinct.
