Plygain is a Welsh tradition of singing carols early Christmas morning. Today, it has expanded to include candle-lit programs held around Christmas and New Year at churches in Wales. The Old Welsh New Year is celebrated on or around Jan. 12 following the old Julian calendar. It is tradition for children to sing Calennig, or sing about the New Year for small gifts or money.
The public is invited to come and participate in the program either by singing, playing an instrument, a reading or anything appropriate to celebrate hope for the New Year. There will be a “Scroll of Hopes” where people can add their thoughts for 2010. Refreshments will be served following the program.
Tyn Rhos Church is located off Ohio 325 south of Rio Grande on Tyn Rhos Road.
Those unable to attend who would like to send their hopes for 2010 to be included in the scroll can contact the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at 800-282-7201, ext. 7186, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
