New blood for city commission; Carter, Williamson, Twyman win county school board seats
GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis residents voted in some new blood Tuesday to serve on the city commission.
Challengers Jay Cremeens and William Matt Johnson were the popular choices of city voters in yesterday’s election. Cremeens won 590 votes while Johnson netted 504.
City Commission President James A. Cozza retained his seat, picking up 385 votes. Vice President Carroll Snowden finished a distant fourth with 266 votes.
The new commission will feature Cozza, Cremeens and Johnson along with incumbents Jon Lynch and Bob Marchi.
Mel Carter, Scott Williamson and Brandon Twyman emerged as the top vote-getters in an extremely tight race for three seats on the Gallia County Local School District Board of Education.
Carter, a former longtime board member, picked up 1,525 votes. Williamson, the lone incumbent on the ballot, collected support from 1,437 voters, while Twyman garnered 1,328 votes.
Carter and Twyman will replace current board members Joyce Boothe and John Payne, who chose not to run for re-election.
Brenda J. Mershon received 1,286 votes. Billy Swain netted 1,255 and Amy Beth Barber finished 977 votes.
In the Gallipolis City School District school board race, longtime incumbents Lynn Angell (2,026 votes) and Timothy V. Kyger (2,523 votes) ran without opposition.
