Point Pleasant fourth after Day 1 at state
WHEELING — The Point Pleasant golf team sits in fourth place in Class AA after Day 1 at the 2009 West Virginia State Golf Tournament at Oglebay Park’s Speidel Golf Course.
The Black Knights were just five shots off the lead, posting a Day 1 team tally of 261.
Grafton is the current Class AA leader with 256 points, followed by Ritchie County (259) and Wyoming East (260) in second and third, respectively.
Opie Lucas and Erik Allbright led PPHS on the day with matching 85s, followed by Alex Potter with a 91.
Justin Cavender rounded out the Point scoring with a round of 107.
Evan Muscari of Wyoming East is the current Class AA leader, posting a round of 73.
Wahama’s lone Class A state qualifier, David Greene, fired a round of 94 and currently sits 20 strokes off the current individual leader.
Jacob Hensler of Parkersburg Catholic is the current Class A leader after a round of 74.
Williamstown leads the Class A team race with 255 points, two better than Huntington St. Joseph with 257.
Hurricane leads the Class AAA team standings with 227 points. Brian Anania of HHS leads the individual competition with a low score of 72.
The West Virginia state golf tournaments will conclude today.
Eastern, Southern finish years at sectionals
CHILLICOTHE — The Eastern and Southern golf teams ended their seasons with fifth and seventh place finishes at the sectional golf tournament.
The Division III Sectional Tournament was held at Jaycees Golf Course in Chillicothe, Wednesday, September 30th. The top two teams and individuals each advanced to the district tournament.
Eastern finished with a team score of 373, while Southern compiled a team total of 401.
Eastern was led by Chris Bissell with a round of 90, Tyler Carroll shot a 92, Christian Amsbary had a 95, Craig Jones shot a 96 to round out the team score, while Jordan Wood shot a 118.
Southern was led by Nathan Roush with a round of 92, Taylor Deem and Cyle Rees shot matching rounds of 99, with Kris Kleski shooting a 111 to round out the Tornado scoring. Colby Roseberry shot a 112 for Southern.
TVC Hocking member Waterford took first place with a team total of 354. While Huntington also scored a 354 and placed second.
Individuals to advance to districts were Todd Griffith, Medalist of the Tournament, from Belpre with an 83, and Caleb Jago from Crooksville with a 90.
