GALLIPOLIS — As part of its upcoming recognition of “Everyday Heroes” — individuals nominated by the community for outstanding and courageous acts — the Gallia County Chapter of the American Red Cross announced that Henry Myers of Patriot is the Military Hero.

He was nominated for the Military Hero for all of his work for veterans, for the organization of all the military funerals and flag presentations.

Henry has been working the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail since his retirement from the military in 1975 and has participated in hundreds of funeral details. They provide funeral details for veterans from Gallia, Meigs and Lawrence counties in Ohio, along with Jackson County in West Virginia.

When they get a call for a funeral detail, they go whereever it is, as long as they can get enough personnel to participate.

The funeral detail is often called on to do the presentation of the colors for public events in the schools and throughout the community.

Henry also volunteers with the VA Hospital in Huntington, W.Va. Henry is a part of its escort service, which helps the patients find their way from place to place within the hospital for different parts of their treatment.

Henry participates in the decoration of veterans graves for Memorial and Veterans days in 12 different cemeteries and participates in parades and patriotic services throughout the year.

In addition to all of Henry’s work with the veterans, Henry is a trustee at four churches.

Henry will join other “Everyday Heroes” for the first recognition breakfast organized by the Red Cross on Thursday, June 18 at 7:30 a.m. in the Gallia County Senior Resource Center.

Tickets are $10 each.
