Employees with the City of Gallipolis were busy on Thursday afternoon, unloading files into the new Gallipolis Municipal Building. The facility, located next to People’s Bank in the 300 Block of Third Avenue, will be open to the public on Friday.
Formerly housed, along with the city police department and Gallipolis Municipal Court at 518 Second Avenue in the now demolished Gallipolis Municipal Building, the city’s “administrative” employees were the last to receive their new office space. The city’s “judicial” employees moved into their new facility, the Gallipolis Justice Center, late in September.
GALLIPOLIS — After years of waiting, employees with the city of Gallipolis’ administrative offices were on the move for the final time on Thursday, settling into their new home at the new Gallipolis Municipal Building.
Located at 333 Third Avenue, the new municipal building was constructed on city-owned property in the municipal parking area over the course of five months.
Hoon, Inc., of Athens was awarded the project after they submitted a low bid of $795,000. With four change orders approved the Gallipolis City Commission, the project now stands at approximately $848,000.
While final touches need to be completed on the facility, Gallipolis City Manager Randy Finney reported earlier this week that the move to the new building this Thursday was a “go” for the administrative offices, which include the code enforcement office, the city’s tax offices, utility office and auditor’s office.
The administrative offices had been housed in an unused portion of the Gallia County Department of Job and Services building at 848 Third Avenue since their move in July 2010 from the now demolished city municipal building that formerly stood at the site of the new justice center.
The new building, complete with a exterior public restrooms and a drive through window for utility payments, provides 6,000 square feet of space for the use of the city employees, as well as a spacious lunch room for city employees and a meeting room primarily for the use of the city commission.
The administrative offices will be open to the public on Friday, March 8. All phone numbers will remain the same, as well as the mailing address of P.O. Box 339. The curb depository will also be moved to the new location.
An grand opening and ribbon cutting at the new facility will take place at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. A city commission meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
