The staff at Green Elementary, which is part of the Gallipolis City School District, is delighted with the recent announcement that Green is a 2012 Ohio School of Promise. The award shows academic excellence in the areas of mathematics and reading.

CENTENARY — The staff of one local school is enjoying the fruit of its labor after learning that it was recently awarded the distinction of being named a 2012 Ohio School of Promise.

Green Elementary recently learned of the award, which is administered by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).

The State Superintendent’s Schools of Promise program recognizes schools across Ohio that are demonstrating high achievement in reading and mathematics for all groups of students, despite diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Students in these schools met or exceeded the state standard of 75 percent passage in both reading and mathematics for the 2011-2012 school year. In previous years, schools could qualify if they met 75 percent passage in either reading or mathematics. In Schools of Promise, all student groups meet the federal requirement of Adequate Yearly Progress.

Out of approximately 4,237 Ohio schools, Green Elementary is one of 163 schools to achieve this honor on the ‘Local Report Card’ for the 2011-2012 school year.

“This is quite an accomplishment. I am proud of our staff, students and parents,” said Green Elementary Principal Brett Wilson. “The staff has worked very hard in continuing our pursuit of excellence. Our teachers have a genuine interest in their students and strive for them to achieve. They set high expectations for their students.”

Wilson also noted the role of parental support in netting the award.

“We also need to acknowledge our parents. We have many parents who set high expectations for their children and are very much involved in their child’s academics. They also make certain their children attend school. These are two very important attributes to our success,” Wilson added.
