Gallia County Local attends Model United Nations

<p>The students from Gallia County Local Schools won four awards at the 2012 Southeastern Ohio Model United Nations. Haiti won Outstanding Presentation in Economic and Social Council I; Egypt won Outstanding Performance in Peacekeeping and Security Council II; and Greece won Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Resolution in the Economic and Social Council II.</p>

GALLIA COUNTY — In mid-December, the Gallia County Local Schools participated in Southeastern Ohio Model United Nations at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The Gallia County Local Schools took 35 students representing eight countries in seven different councils. The countries represented were Haiti, Greece, Spain, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Jordan, Uganda and India. The students participated in formal debates and made cultural presentations and performances.

Three eighth grade students were elected to be Model UN officers next year. They were Brianna McGuire (RVMS), Brody Moles (RVMS) and Josh Henry (SGJH).

The students from Gallia County Local Schools won four awards. Haiti won Outstanding Presentation in Economic and Social Council I. Haiti’s group included Bailey Ward, Clarissa Coldren, Gavin Davis and Devan McGhee, all seventh graders from River Valley Middle School. Egypt won Outstanding Performance in Peacekeeping and Security Council II. Egypt’s group included Rachal Colburn (Hannan Trace), Alyssa Sheets (Southwestern), Madisyn Burd (RVMS), Josie Jones (RVMS) and Julia Nutter (RVMS), all in 6th grade. Greece won Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Resolution in the Economic and Social Council II. Greece’s group included Brianna McGuire, Abby Coleman, Lexi Jeffers, Josh Winters, Brody Moles and Kevin Cline, all 8th graders from River Valley Middle School.

Other participants were Bridgett Wray, Nick Yongue, Josh Henry, Ian Polcyn and Dayna Nance representing Azerbaijan. Robbie Schuhl and Bailey Hollingsworth represented Spain. Sharla Moody, Keri Johnson, Hunter Coon and George Rickett represented Uganda. Haley Johnson, Illyssa Saunders, Riley Sanders and Colton Bowers represented India. Chad Bostic, Ethan Browning, Corey Shaw, Jordan House and Logan Hunt represented Jordan.
