POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Two straight weeks, two big scoring outputs for the Point Pleasant Big Blacks.

Point Pleasant rolled Shady Spring early to a 27-0 halftime lead and held on for a 48-7 win over the Tigers.

The Big Blacks – now with their second win in a row – came into the week tied for 12th in the AAA standings. The win improves the locals to 6-2 on the season, the fifth winning season in a row.

The Big Blacks defense held Adam Weeks – Shady Spring’s quarterback who was a First Team All-State selection – to 16 of 26 passing for 209 yards and two interceptions.

It was the second straight 100 yard rusher this week – senior running back Marquez Griffin ran for 123 yards on six carries and one touchdown. Junior Teran Barnitz ran the ball 6 times for 87 yards and scored two touchdowns on offense to go with his two defensive touchdowns.

Other rushers for Point included Seth Berkley 6 for 26, Tylun Campbell 5 for 16, Cody Mitchell 2 for 15, Cody Marcum 1 for 15, Chase Walton 1 for 13, Hunter Trent 1 for 12, Austen Toler 1 for 7, Cody McDaniel 1 for 6, and Aden Yates 5 for -4.

Sophomore quarterback Aden Yates had his 7th 100+ yard passing performance. He completed six of seven passes for 121 yards. Teran Barnitz also completed one pass for 30 yards.

The leading receiver on the night was Tylun Campbell with one catch for 66 yards. Jacob Gardner had one catch for 30 yards, Brycen Reymond had two catches for 27 yards, Teran Barnitz with 2 for 21 yards, and Marquez Griffin with one catch for 7 yards.

Shady Spring started the game with a 16 play drive that consumed most of the first quarter clock before the drive stalled just inside the red-zone.

The Big Blacks drove quickly to mid-field when a bad snap put the Big Blacks into a 2nd and 25 situation. Yates found Campbell on a 66 yard screen pass on the following play to put the Big Blacks on the board. Collin Peal kicked the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.

Shady Spring’s following drive stalled early when several Big Blacks combined for a big third down sack. The Big Blacks used big runs from Griffin and Barnitz to get the next drive going before Yates found Reymond for an 18 yard touchdown pass. The kick was no good.

The next Shady drive ended quickly with another sack on third down. The first play of the next drive was another Point Pleasant touchdown when Griffin ran one in from 63 yards out.

On the first play of the next Shady drive, Barnitz had his first interception touchdown return when he picked off Shady quarterback Adam Weeks from 25 yards out.

The second half featured three more Point Pleasant scores – all from Teran Barnitz, two offensive and one more defensive interception return.

Strong defensive performances from Point included freshman Cody McDaniel, junior Teran Barnitz, sophomore Gage Buskirk, senior Hunter Bellamy, senior Conner Templeton, and senior Andrew Williamson.

The Big Blacks will now prepare for a Saturday afternoon game against the Oak Glen Golden Bears at 1:30 PM. The Golden Bears were off last night and will come into the game with playoff hopes with a 4-4 record.
