Rotarian Kevin Dennis receives his TB test from Melissa Conkle, RN BSN and Director of Nursing from the Gallia County Health District.
President Jodie welcomed our guest speaker, Tara Craaybeek, District 6690 Chair for the Rotary Foundation. Next Week our guest will be Bryna Butler, local author of the Midnight Guardian Book Series. The District Foundation and Membership Seminar was held on September 29th in Lancaster--President Jodie, Secretary Shana ,VP Lee and Chuck attended and had an awesome time. Our club leadership gained a lot of new knowledge and appreciate for the efforts at the District level.

Melissa Conkle, RN, BSN, from the Gallia County Health Department was with us to administer flu and TB shots to club members for the upcoming Bob Evans Farm Festival. A number of members expressed the importance to the club for club-wide participation in this event. It looks like we will have decent weather this year, maybe a bit cool. Please Sign up for the various shifts at the Farm Festival, bring your family or friends to help. We especially need helpers to tear down after a long, tiring weekend of super-duper fund raising!

Rotary Reading: Our club has moved ahead to support literacy efforts in the County elementary schools with our monthly reading program. Sign-up sheets were distributed and members encouraged to volunteer for this great project. Please sign-up to read to our local youngsters.

Split-The-Pot: Our STP for the meeting was facilitated by Melissa Kimmel. Melissa did a great job by pushing sales so we had $6 in the small pot and $13 in the large pot. Guest, Charlene Smith was today's winner and she graciously donated her winnings back to the club. Talk about beginners luck… Charlene just missed out on the 'Big One' by drawing the Queen of Clubs. Oh, So Close! Our Foundation Fine was assessed by Charlene against anyone who had not yet signed up to work the BOB EVANS FARM FESTIVAL. Thank you, Charlene and Melissa!

Fellowship: Gordon Amsbary ran our club fellowship again for the meeting today. Today's trivia question was what female artist had the most albums and honors to their name? This would he be non other than Barbara Streisand. Gordo recalled a picture which appeared in a club newsletter a few years ago featuring members, Lee Saltzgaber and Heather Crum, in a version of the famous painting, American Gothic. It turns out the gentleman holding the pitchfork was a dentist. There is a new law in New Jersey which requires pets to be buckled in seatbets in a moving automobile. Gordo mused how difficult might it be to put a seat belt on a cat?? Today is 'Fugal Fun' Day. Try to have fun and save money at the same time!

Fines today included Margret Evans who offered a buck for being late.

Happy Bucks: Jim Morrison offered a happy buck as he received a call from Rotary Exchange Student, Arjan, who is doing well in the Netherlands, and wished to tell the club hello. Shana Booher offered a happy buck for attending the Rotary conference with Jodie, Lee and Chuck. Our guest, Tara Craaybeek, offered a dollar to honor her eldest daughter’s birthday. Gordon’s words of wisdom, “He who has a thing to sell and goes and whispers in a well is not as apt to get the dollars as he who climbs a tree and hollers.”

Program: Introduced by Mel, Today's guest speaker, Tara Craaybeek was introduced by PDG, Mel Simon. Tara serves as Chair of the District 6690 committee for The Rotary Foundation. Tara joined the Lancaster-Sherman Rotary club in 2002 and has served as President and Foundation Chair. This is our speaker's last year in her District role and her remarks to Rotarians first reminded us of why the Rotary Foundation exists. Rotary's reach for humanitarian efforts have a greater reach than most organizations going where politicians and religious groups cannot. She discussed the six areas of focus: Peace, Disease, Water/Sanitation, Maternal and Child Health, Education, Economic/Community Development. As clubs, we have to focus on sustainability of the programs we implement. There are three direct ways to support the Foundation: Polio Plus, the Annual Fund, and the Permanent Fund. Because of Rotary's commitment with Polio Plus, there were only 364 cases of polio reported worldwide and as of September 2, 2012, there are only 134 cases on record that are located in very difficult areas to reach.

Our local effort is with Every Rotarian Every Year. a push to encourage every Rotarian to give something every year to the Foundation. We may suggest an annual amount of $100 but we need for every member to give something even just $20. Our speaker showed examples of how far our contributions can go to help worldwide. The Annual Fund supports grants through the Share Program where contributions are credited to the donor's club. The money is then shared and divided to come back to the district for grants.

Our speaker suggested ways our members can be engaged in the club, not necessarily focusing solely on attendance but stimulating members and giving them a reason to be a Rotarian! Paul Harris Fellows are those contributors who give a total of $1000. Tara offered time at the conclusion of her remarks for questions from members. Thank you so much, Tara, for taking the time to come to Gallipolis Rotary!

President Jodie reminded everyone of the meeting of the club's Board of Directors immediately following the meeting. This is a good time to learn more about the functions in the club and attendance credit is offered to any members who stay for the meeting.
