GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Gallia County Jail. The incident occurred early Saturday morning.

According to Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning, William E. Mullins, Jr., 38, of Gallipolis, was found hanging in a cell at approximately 4:35 a.m. Saturday. Mullins had been arrested at approximately 2:30 a.m. earlier on charges of domestic violence by the Gallipolis Police Department. He was brought to the Gallia County Jail for booking and incarceration. Approximately two hours later, the on-duty jail staff was notified that there was an incident in the cell block.

“As is common in these types of cases, Ohio BCI&I has been brought in to conduct an investigation into the incident,” added Browning.

This case remains under investigation.
