Lady Tornadoes outlast Meigs in opener

RACINE, Ohio — The Southern volleyball team notched its first win of the 2012 season Monday night in Charles W. Hayman Gymnasium after outlasting Meigs through five sets.

The Lady Tornadoes (1-0) took the first game of the night 25-13 before Meigs (0-1) rallied back to take the next two games, both by a score of 25-19. SHS battled back and took the fourth game 25-18. A back-and-forth fifth game led to Southern emerging victorious 15-12 to take the match.

Senior Maggie Cummins led SHS in points on the night, scoring 14 points, followed by Darien Diddle with 10 points. Jordan Huddleston had nine points, Jansen Wolfe had seven, and both Katie Jenkins and Celestia Hendrix finished with six points. Baylee Hupp with two points and Alison Deem with one rounded out the SHS scoring.

Leading the net attack for the Lady Tornadoes was Jansen Wolfe with six kills, followed by Maggie Cummins and Celestia Hendrix with five apiece. Jordan Huddleston had three kills, Baylee Hupp had two, and Katie Jenkins had one kill for SHS.

Lindsay Patterson and Olivia Cremeans led the Lady Marauders scoring attack with seven points apiece, followed by Mercadies George with five. Emily Kinnan finished with four points, while Brook Andrus and Brooke Reynolds finished with two points each to round out the MHS scoring.

With 15 kills on the night Brook Andrus led the Lady Marauders’ net attack. Emily Kinnan had 11 kills, followed by Mercadies George with eight, Hannah Cremeans with five, Olivia Cremeans with four, and Lindsay Patterson with one.
