GALLIPOLIS — A Bidwell man recently arrested on an outstanding warrant by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office is now facing an 18-count indictment in the Common Pleas Court of Gallia County.

Matthew J. Gilbert, 24, pleaded not guilty to eight counts of burglary, nine counts of theft and one count of breaking and entering during a hearing before Common Pleas Judge D. Dean Evans on Monday.

The defendant was charged after a string of burglaries that occurred in April this year.

According to the indictment, Gilbert allegedly burglarized a residence located on Yellowtown Road on April 4 and a home on Cargo Road on April 5. The indictment further indicates that Gilbert allegedly burglarized a residence on Williams Hollow Road between April 13-15 and stole four different firearms from the residence.

A residence was also allegedly broken into by the defendant on April 17 and three firearms and Percocets, a schedule II controlled substance, were taken from that residence.

The indictment further alleges that Gilbert broke into a residence on Bulaville Pike on April 19-21, residences on Ohio 160, Kerr Road and an outbuilding on April 23, as well as the same residence on Bulaville Pike between November 7 and November 23, 2009.

During his arraignment, the defendant’s bond was set at $100,000, 10 percent.

A jury trial has been set for October 22 in this case.

Gilbert was also arraigned on Monday in a 2011 case on one count of burglary for his alleged involvement in a break-in at a home located on Brick School Road on September 27, 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty in this case and his bond was set at $100,000, 10 percent. A jury trial has also been scheduled in this case for October 22.

In a third 2010 case, Gilbert was arraigned on probation violations on Monday.

In this case, the defendant was sentenced to 24 months of community control on October 31, 2011, after pleading guilty to the burglary of a residence on Ohio 588 between December 25 and December 27, 2009.

A warrant was issued for Gilbert’s arrest in relation to this case on November 14, 2011, after he allegedly violated the terms of his probation.

He is scheduled to appear in the common pleas court on September 27 for a hearing in relation to the community control violations.

His bond was set at $25,000, 10 percent.

Gilbert was arrested late on the evening of Thursday, August 2 at an apartment located in the Gallia Metropolitan Estates, 381 Buckridge Road, Bidwell, after he was spotted fleeing into the apartment by a deputy.

The defendant, who had warrants out for his arrest, was later found by officers in the attic of the residence, where he resides with Heather N. Gilbert, 28, hiding under insulation.

According to the police report, before the suspect could be handcuffed after being ordered out of the attic, he knocked one of the deputies down before running for the stairs of the apartment.

Gilbert was subsequently apprehended by a sheriff’s office canine unit who had been stationed in the downstairs portion of the residence.

He was later transported to Holzer Medical Center to be treated for bites sustained during his attempted escape.

Following his arrest, the suspect later appeared in the Gallipolis Municipal Court on a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest and his bond was set at $10,000, 10 percent. During a pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, Gilbert pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is scheduled to appear for a second pre-trial hearing in the municipal court on August 29.

Heather Gilbert was also present on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing in regard to a charge of obstruction of justice through the harboring of a criminal. This case was bound over to the common pleas court and will be heard by a grand jury. Her bond was continued at $100,000, 10 percent.

Matthew Gilbert is being held in the Gallia County Jail, while Heather Gilbert is currently being held in the Middleport Jail.
