GALLIPOLIS — Three individuals believed to have aided or abetted James C. Garrett in the alleged murder of Zane Taylor last month were recently arraigned in the Gallia County Court of Common Pleas on charges related to the incident.

Lacey S. Redmond, 26, Portsmouth Road, Gallipolis; Steven L. Williams, 31, 381 Buck Ridge Road, Bidwell; and Eugene O. Wasonga, 25, Sunset Lane, Point Pleasant, W.Va., have all been charged and have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery and complicity to murder following the events of June 11, 2012.

The co-defendants were arrested after an investigation in to the death of Zane T. Taylor, 33, who was found dead in his home at approximately 2 p.m. on June 11.

Deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Taylor’s home at 1841 Ohio 218 and, following subsequent interviews of the suspects, Redmond, Wasonga and Williams, as well as James C. Garrett, 21, Annista Drive, Point Pleasant, W.Va., were charged in relation to Taylor’s death.

According to testimony given during a preliminary hearing in this case, the suspects allegedly traveled together to Taylor’s home where Redmond made initial contact with the victim. The remaining three suspects then allegedly entered Taylor’s home to rob the victim of money and/or items of value that could be located throughout the residence.

The suspects reportedly told investigators that it was Garrett’s “job” to hold the victim to prevent his involvement in the robbery — a choke hold that allegedly caused Taylor’s death.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate the discovery of a hemorrhage in the musculature of the victim’s neck — the result of a blunt force injury — as well as contusions on the head in the eye and ear area.

During the preliminary hearing, Gallia County Coroner Dr. Daniel Whiteley reported that he could not report with any degree of medical certainty what caused the hemorrhage and contusions on Taylor’s body, but injuries to the neck could be consistent with those that could have resulted from having one’s neck held from behind.

Garrett was taken into custody without incident after he turned himself into the Gallia County Sheriff’s office on June 12. Redmond was also taken into custody on June 12 at the sheriff’s office, Williams was arrested at the Gallia Metropolitan Estates in Bidwell and Wasonga was later located and taken into custody with the help of the West Virginia State Police.

Earlier this month, Garrett pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder, aggravated robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

Garrett’s bond was set at $1 million, 10 percent. A jury trial has been set in this case for September 4. He is being represented by public defender Richard Hedges.

During their arraignment hearings, bonds were also continued at $1 million, 10 percent, for Redmond, Williams and Wasonga.

Redmond is being represented by defense attorney Barbara Wallen. A jury trial in Redmond’s case has been scheduled for August 29 in the common pleas court.

A jury trial in this case against Wasonga has been scheduled for August 28. He is being represented by William Conley.

Williams retained counsel, Charles Knight, in relation to his case. He is scheduled to appear for a jury trial on August 29.

Williams is also facing a previous fifth degree trafficking charge in the common pleas court.

All four suspects remain in custody.
