Joan Mackenzie Layne Lewis passed away on June 1, 2012, at the Wexner Heritage Center in Columbus Ohio. She was born October 13, 1924, the daughter of Harold and Martha Mackenzie, and spent much of her childhood in Gallipolis, Ohio.

Joan married Harland Layne in 1946, and they lived in Dayton until his death in 1957. She then moved to Gallipolis to raise her two children, where she worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Lewis Brown. In 1970, Joan moved to Columbus to work as medical secretary for the Department of Otolaryngology at University Hospital. In 1980, she married Dallas Lewis and moved to San Diego. In 1993, they relocated to Columbus.

She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her kindness and her love of life. She is survived by two daughters, Marty Layne (Patty Bird) of Portland, ME, and Barb Layne (Susan Martin) of Bexley, Ohio; a grandson, Andrew Layne of Des Moines, IA; a sister, Becky Stark, of Fairfax VA; a brother, Al (Dot) Mackenzie, of Washington, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff of the Wexner Heritage Center. A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 3, 2012. Donations in remembrance of Joan may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central Ohio Chapter, 1379 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
