GAHS students net $1.63 million in scholarships, grants

CENTENARY — At the annual commencement exercises held at Gallia Academy High School in Centenary on Friday night, the graduating seniors of the class of 2012 were honored not only for their academic achievements, but also for their athletic accomplishments. The students were also recognized for their future endeavors.

Several of the students were awarded senior keys for their accomplishments in various fields of study.

Outstanding senior in science — Evans Smalley; outstanding senior in math — Boeing Smith; outstanding senior in English — Alyssa Lucas; outstanding seniors in social students — Evans Smalley and Alyssa Lucas; outstanding senior in music — Evans Smalley; outstanding seniors in athletics — Brandon Taylor, Peyton Adkins and Heather Ward.

Alyssa Lucas, Daniel Schneider, Boeing Smith and Jessica Ward were also awarded senior keys for their work in academics, as representatives of the top 10 percent of the class and for attaining the highest grade point average.

Those students signing with the United States Armed Forces were also recognized on Friday and received a standing ovation from their fellow graduates, GAHS faculty and staff and from the hundreds of friends and family members in attendance. These students are: Bill Joe Angell, U.S. Navy; Joshua Caleb Craft, U.S. Army; Joe Russell Jeffers, III, U.S. Air Force; Lee Matthew Kerr, II, U.S. Marine Corps; Harold Lloyd Porter, III, U.S. Air Force; Lane Roberts, U.S. Army; Christian Tyler Watson, U.S. Marine Corps; Francis Andrew Woods, II, U.S. Navy; and David Andrew Young, II, U.S. Air Force.

The representatives of the top percent of the class are: Bryce Dillon Amos; Michael Nabil Fahmy; Daniel Stephen Fraser; Sarah Jane Lear; Alyssa Joyce Lucas; Alexander S. Lyles; Madison Faith Moritz; MacKenzie Brooke Newberry; Krista Lynn Rocchi; Haley Elisabeth Rosier; Donovan Kyle Saunders; Daniel Clayton Schneider; Chobee Lea Sheets; Evans Smalley; Boeing Jorgensen Smith; Zackary Cain Tackett; Heather Jean Ward; and Jessica Annette Ward.

The class of 2012 received scholarships totalling approximately $1.63 million. The following is a list of the scholarships awarded to the GAHS graduates as listed in the commencement program:

Peyton Adkins — Elks Scholarship $2,000. Ohio University Athletic Scholarship $60,000, total for four years.

Bryce Amos — Foodland Scholarship $1,000. Ohio University Gateway Scholarship $41,140, total for four years.

Stephen Atkins — Urbana University Blue Knight Football Scholarship $40,000, total for four years. Urbana University Academic Merit Scholarship $30,000, total for four years.

Bransen Barr — Urbana University Blue Knight Football Scholarship $44,000, total for four years. Urbana University Academic Merit Scholarship $30,000, total for four years.

Darian Bennett — Kent State University Trustee Scholarship $4,000, total for four years. Montgomery GI Bill $33,000, total for three years.

Bryant Bokovitz — Capital University Presidential Scholarship $32,000, total for four years. Capital University Connect Award $5,600, total for four years. Capital University Grant Award $20,000, total for four years. Knights of Columbus Scholarship $750.

Kierstein R. Casto — University of Kentucky Flagship Scholarship $3,000. University of Kentucky Jay Hall Scholarship $1,864. Wiseman-Roach 4-H Scholarship $2,000, total for four years.

Kelle Craft — Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters’ Scholarship $1,000. Outstanding Senior Choir Member Scholarship $100.
