GALLIPOLIS — An Oak Hill man has been arrested on four counts of felony rape and one count of tampering with evidence following an investigation by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI).

According to a press release issued by Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning, William H. Simmers, Jr., 54, of Cambria Furnace Road, Oak Hill, was arrested at his home just after midnight Tuesday morning.

The arrest came after an investigation found that the suspect had allegedly been engaging in sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old Gallia County girl.

Officers from the Oak Hill Police Department contacted the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office with the information after the mother of the girl came to them on Monday.

Simmers remains in the Gallia County Jail following his indictment by a grand jury on Wednesday.
