SYRACUSE — “A Caroling We Will Go” is the theme of the annual Meigs County Garden Club Association’s Holiday Flower Show to be staged Nov. 22-23 at Carleton School in Syracuse.

The flower show, an annual kickoff to the holiday season, is open for viewing by the public on both days at no cost. The hours are 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There are also two artistic arrangement classes in which anyone can exhibit whether or not they belong to a garden club.

Each class in the show will carry out the holiday theme with the name of a Christmas carol. The show will feature in addition to the two invitational class, seven classes in the artistic design division for exhibit by garden club members only and two classes for junior exhibitors.

The classes in which only members of the participating garden clubs can exhibit are as follows:

“Silent Night,” to include the Holy Family; “The First Noel,” a fantasy flow design; “Away in the Manager,” exhibit including wood; “Jingle Bells,” a vibratile; “We Three Kings,” Decorated Packages with each one containing planting material in the wrapping or decoration, with a division for a gift for a child and one for a gift for an adult; “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” an illuminary and “O Little town of Bethlehem,” a synergistic design.

The invitational classes open to anyone are “O Come All Ye Faithful,” a creative design; and “Deck the Halls,” a door or wall decoration in three categories, evergreen, cones and/or pods, and herbal/dried. The artistic arrangements must be the work of the exhibitor.

The classes for junior exhibitors are “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” a design including an angel figurine; and “O Christmas Tree,” an arrangement including evergreen materials. There will also be an educational section which will feature exhibits by Master Gardeners called “Joy to the World.”

The horticulture division includes classes for evergreens, narrow leaf and broadleaf, berried branches, potted cacti or succulent, houseplants, both blooming and foliate. Junior classes are evergreen, dried roadside material, and potted plants. The rules specify that plants must be owned and grown by the exhibitor for at least three months prior to the show. No oil or polish is permitted on the foliage.

Entries in all classes must be in place by noon on Saturday, Nov. 22 and may not be removed before 4 p.m. on Nov. 23. Judging of the exhibits by an accredited judge of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and ribbons will be awarded in several places in each class.

Special awards to be presented include best of show, reserve best of show and creativity in the adult division, and best of show in artistic and horticulture sweepstakes in the junior division. The flower show committee is composed of members of the Wildwood Garden Club, the Rutland Friendly Gardeners, the Shade Valley Council of Floral Arts, the Chester Garden Club, and the Winding Trail Garden Club.
