DEVOLA — Gallia Academy’s soccer season came to an end Tuesday night during a 3-0 setback to host Marietta in a Division II sectional semifinal at the Devola Sports Complex in Washington County.
The Blue Devils (3-12-1) managed only four shots on goal and had a total of six shots overall in the setback. The Tigers (8-5-4) — on the other hand — produced 25 shots in all, including 16 on goal.
But despite the discrepancy in shot attempts, the Blue and White only found themselves down 1-0 at the intermission. But that deficit was also self-inflicted, as Marietta’s Kyle Gray scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute to break open the scoring.
A second penalty kick in the second half allowed the hosts to take a 2-0 advantage as Wes Riley scored in the 64th minute. Matt Morrison concluded the scoring in the 69th minute on an unassisted goal.
Gallia Academy goalkeeper Allie Troester made 11 saves in the setback, while MHS goalie Chris Stollar made successful saves on four of the Devils’ attempts.
Marietta advances to the sectional final on Saturday when it hosts Waverly at 1 p.m.
It was the final prep game for Mike Hackett, the lone senior on the GAHS squad.
“Mike has been a very good role model for this program and it will be extremely hard to replace a young man of his qualities. We’re going to miss him,” GAHS head coach Mike Dyer said. “However, he is the only player we are losing to graduation, so we should have a real good nucleus coming back to us next year.
“We are excited about what next year could be for this program.”
