GALLIPOLIS — Area children are getting a chance to learn through hands on experiences as they take on various community roles at several new play stations in the preschool room at French City Child Care, located at the corner of Third Avenue and Court Street in Gallipolis.

Supplies for each of the stations were donated by local businesses and individuals, with special activities and guest speakers planned to make the most of the materials available.

“We’ve already had an exciting month,” said teacher Paula Hill. “We found a treasure map which led us on a field trip to the City Park, but the sneaky pirates tricked us! The treasure we found was full of gummy worms, but we found the real map and once again, we were off.”

The new classroom contains a veterinarian clinic, a scientific laboratory, a restaurant, a dinosaur dig, an art gallery, a mechanic shop and even a rock and roll band. Kids spend their time visiting the areas and pretending to perform procedures disguised as different people in the community.

“We had the opportunity to show off our musical talents when the French City Rock band was formed,” said Hill. “Everyone dressed in costumes while we played our instruments and sang songs to our loyal fans. They showed their appreciation by waving glow sticks and singing along. A great time was had by all.”

This month’s theme is harvest, and lessons will focus on fall, nature preservation, recycling and soil conservation.

“It’s a fun way to learn and they really get into it,” said Hill. “They’re exploring different career roles as opposed to selective free-play. At each station they can learn about future career possibilities. They love it.”

The staff at French City Child Care wishes to thank local farmer Homer Hill, Mitch’s Flower Shop, Dr. Allan Boster and the Riverbend Animal Clinic, Bob’s Market and Greenhouses Inc., Tractor Supply Co., Washington Elementary, Peggy Huber and Miss Lisa for making the project possible.

Ideas, supplies and volunteers are always needed and greatly appreciated. For more information call 446-4467.
