ASHTON,
W.Va. — The Southern Tornadoes (1-3) picked up their first win of the season by defeating the Hannan Wildcats (0-3)in a big way Friday night claiming a huge 57-0 victory.
The Tornadoes tallied 414 yards rushing and witnessed touchdowns from five different backs en route to the victory. The Tornado defense forced four turnovers and also held the wildcats to 86 yards and just three first downs.
The night got off to a great start for the Tornados when Sean Coppick forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage. The fumble, recovered by Eric Buzzard, set up the Tornado offense on the Wildcat 18 yard line.
Southern fullback Sean Coppick ran the next play into the end zone for what appeared to be the first Southern touchdown of the season, but the play was nullified due to a hold.
Once that first score came, the flood gates opened. Southern would eventually score on the drive when, with 9:43 to go in the first quarter, Michael Manuel ran in the first of his three touchdowns. After the Southern defense forced a 3 and out, defensive end Brad Coppick partially blocked a punt to set up the Tornadoes on the Hannan 25. Five plays later Manuel punched in his second scoring run and Zach Ash added the extra point, to put Southern up 13-0.
Hannan went three and out on the next possessionSouthern took over on the Wildcat 40, but a holding call and a 4th down sack stalled the drive, giving the Wildcats the ball on the Tornado 45. Making it somewhat of a habit, the Southern defense would again force a three and out situation. The ensuing Southern drive ended when Hannan linebacker Robert Worth tackled tailback Greg Jenkins on the 1 yard line on 4th and goal.
