GALLIPOLIS — To conform with the Americans with Disabilities Act and directives from Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, several polling places in Gallia County have been changed for the Nov. 4 election to better accommodate voters with disabilities.

Gallia’s Board of Elections recently completed tours of voting locations and following evaluations of the sites, nine of the 35 precincts will be moved from the sites where voters last cast ballots in the March 4 primary.

In Gallipolis, voters in city precincts 3, 4 and 5 will go to the Gallia Early Childhood Center at 77 Mill Creek Road. Guyan Precinct moves to the Crown City Volunteer Fire Department in the former Landon’s Market building at 25516 Ohio 7 South, and Guyan Township votes at the District 2 Joint Volunteer Fire Department at 120 Mercerville Road in Mercerville.

Huntington Township will vote at the Vinton Village Hall; Ohio Township at the Kings Chapel Church Fellowship Hall, 795 Kings Chapel Cemetery Road, Crown City; Perry Township voters will go Buckeye Rural Electric Cooperative, 4848 Ohio 325 South, Patriot; and Centerville Precinct casts ballots at the Community Christian Fellowship Church, 290 Trails End Road, Thurman.

Elections Director Jeff Halley said Brunner is seeking a standardization in Ohio’s voting locations that includes easy accessibility. On Nov. 4, federal representatives will be randomly checking 100 voting sites in 30 states, and Ohio is among them.

“What Secretary Brunner’s standard of accessibility and our standard of accessibility have been different in the past,” Halley said. “We believed the schools were up-to-date, but even access for voters from vans have been a challenge for us.”

Due to limited parking, for example, Southwestern and Vinton elementaries were ruled out in the board’s evaluation of alternative sites.

“Our hope is for the state, the teachers association, the school boards association and the secretary of state can get together and consider closing schools on Election Day, as they do in West Virginia, but that’s sometime down the road,” he added. “We get good cooperation from our school districts and we’ve always managed.”

Halley thanked voters in advance for their patience and understanding with the changes.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but this was not a local decision,” he said. “It was a tough decision for our board to make.”

Armed with a checklist, board members had to gauge such considerations as parking, ramps, entrances, seats, tables and counters and elevators, if available, at all voting sites.

“The checklist runs the gamut of everything to get them up to snuff,” Deputy Elections Director Dale Whitt said.

But to assist voters in coping with changes and for other information, the board recently launched its new web site on gallianet.net. Among other features, the web site not only offers map directions to all polling locations, but also registration forms, where to register, candidate listings, the precincts where people vote and even the number of absentee ballots that have been distributed.

The site was created by John Grubb, the county’s information technology director.

“It’s a major convenience for the voters,” Whitt said.

Absentee ballot forms have also been included on notice of election cards voters have recently received by mail.

The last day to register to vote on Nov. 4 will be Monday, Oct. 6, and the board office will be open until 9 p.m. that day to accept registrations.
