SOUTH POINT - The effort was there. The end result, however, was not.
Gallia Academy soccer had seven more shots on goal than host South Point in the season opener Tuesday, but the Pointers caught a few more extra breaks down the stretch en route to a 3-2 decision over the Blue Devils during a non-conference matchup.
Tied at one during the intermission, the hosts rallied with a pair of second-half goals to overcome GAHS and take the final decision. South Point (1-0) scored their goals in dramatic fashion, with two of those coming on penalty kicks and the other on a corner kick.
The Blue Devils - who outshot the hosts 17-10 on the night - received goals from Zeke Maher and Joshua Jackson, and both Jackson and Cory Eberhard added an assist each. Allie Troester has seven saves in goal for the Blue and White, who fell to 0-1 this season.
Gallia Academy will return to action this Thursday when they travel to Ohio's First Capital for a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League matchup with the Chillicothe Cavaliers. The match will start at 4:30 p.m.
