GALLIPOLIS - Chad C. McCormick was sentenced to serve prison time on three charges in two separate cases in Gallia County Common Pleas Court last week, wrapping up a string of thefts committed by the Patriot man.

McCormick, 23, 1322 Peniel Road, pled guilty to two counts of theft for stealing four HVAC unit copper coils on Dec. 22, 2007 from the Gallipolis Christian Church and one HVAC unit copper coil on Dec. 27, 2007 from the Salem Baptist Church near Patriot. The state dropped counts two and four of the indictment, both breaking and entering charges.

He also pled guilty to one count of disrupting public service in connection with the theft of 100 feet of telephone cable stolen from poles located along Ohio 141 west of Cadmus on June 20, which in turn interfered with the phone service of around 70 residents in Perry and Walnut townships.

McCormick was sentenced to serve 11 months in prison for each theft charge and 17 months in prison for disrupting public service. All sentences are to run concurrent with each other.

He was further ordered to pay $12,600 restitution to the Gallipolis Christian Church and $4,500 restitution to the Salem Baptist Church.

It should be noted that McCormick was sentenced to 24 months of community control in June 2008 after pleading guilty to a Mattress Warehouse theft.

Other cases recently resolved include:

Justin Hartsook, 20, 150 Clark Chapel Road, Apartment 2, Bidwell, was sentenced to 24 months of community control after pleading guilty to one count of breaking and entering in connection with trespassing on AT&T land in May 2007.

Count two of the indictment, tampering with evidence, was dismissed by the state in accordance with a plea agreement entered into with Hartsook that was made upon the recommendation of the victim.

Hartsook was further ordered to an evaluation by Spectrum Outreach Center, 500 hours of community service with all but 60 hours stayed, obtain his GED, register with Ohio Employment Services, pay $1,491 in restitution to AT&T, have no contact with AT&T, and pay costs of prosecution for judgment rendered.

William A. Belton, 27, Dayton, was sentenced to four years community control in court on Tuesday.

Belton pled guilty to possession of drugs and attempted trafficking in drugs, a lesser charge than trafficking in drugs, for which he was initially indicted in connection with 30 grams of crack cocaine.

He was further ordered to forfeit $1,971 to the Gallia County Sheriff's Department pursuant to his plea agreement, along with an evaluation by Spectrum Outreach Center, 500 hours of community services with all but 60 hours stayed, register with Ohio Employment Services, six months suspended operator's license, and to pay costs of prosecution for judgment rendered.

Jason Jones, 30, 56 Hilda Drive, Gallipolis, was sentenced to serve 11 months in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction after pleading guilty to three community control violations in court last week.

Jones was sentenced to community control after pleading guilty to possessing of crack cocaine in November 2007. Upon his release from prison he will be subject to three years of post release control.
