Man pleads innocent to ID fraud charges

GALLIPOLIS - A Lorain County man pled not guilty to four counts of forgery and 10 counts of identity fraud in Gallia County Common Pleas Court on Monday.

According to court records, Brent Ramon Willis, 30, was stopped for a traffic violation on May 20 and was subsequently arrested for driving under suspension. During a search of his vehicle, officers' found writings with personal identifying information of 12 individuals, including two false driver's licenses and two false Visa debit cards.

It has also been alleged that during an interview, Willis admitted to buying and selling personal identities and even described how his identity fraud operation works to officers.

The forgery charges include an Ohio driver's license purported to belong to William Lauer, a Visa debit card purported to belong to William Lauer, an Ohio driver's license purported to belong to Pete Demaris, and a Visa debit card purported to belong to Pete Demaris, the said Willis knowing said writings to have been forged.

The identity fraud charges allege that Willis did, without the express or implied consent of Thomas Russell, Neil Joseph, Keith Griffin, Charles Sherwin, Donald Restle, Terrance Hamilton, Phillip Wilson, David Weaver, Michael Kramper or Allen Lawson, knowingly use, obtain, or possess their personal identifying information with the intent to represent their personal identifying information as his own personal ID information.

Willis has pled not guilty to the charges and was released on his own recognizance under a $100,000 bond with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent.

His jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 24, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Other indictments recently unsealed include:

Charles P. Lewis, 40, 29 Sun Valley Drive, Gallipolis, has been charged with one count of violation of protection order.

According to the indictment, it is alleged that on or about May 25 he did recklessly violate a term of a protection order issued, or consent agreement approved, the said Lewis having been previously convicted of violating a protection order in Gallipolis Municipal Court.

Lewis has pled not guilty to this charge and was released on his own recognizance under a $5,000 bond along with an additional bond of $1,000 ten percent secured.

His jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 24, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Gary McGuire, 33, 358 E. Bethel Church Road, Gallipolis, has been charged with one count of theft for allegedly stealing a 32-inch LCD television from Rent to Own on or about Nov. 19, 2005.

McGuire has pled not guilty to the charge and he was released on his own recognizance under a $5,000 bond with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent secured.

His jury trial is scheduled for Dec. 1, 2008 at 9 a.m.

John Lyons, 39, Scottown, has been charged with two counts of felonious assault as it is alleged that he and another defendant knowingly caused serious physical harm to Russell and Larry Ferris on July 8.

Lyons pled not guilty to the charges and he was released on his own recognizance under a $40,000 bond with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent.

His jury trial is scheduled for Dec. 3, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Chad C. McCormick, 23, 1322 Peniel Road, Patriot, has been charged with one count of disrupting public service in connection with the alleged theft of 100 feet of telephone cable taken from poles located along Ohio 141 west of Cadmus on June 20, which in turn interfered with the phone service of around 70 residents in the Perry and Walnut township areas.

McCormick pled not guilty to the charge in court last week and his bond was set at $10,000 own recognizance with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent secured.

His jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 20, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Josh Shortridge, 20, 448 Spruce St. Extension, Gallipolis, has been charged with one count of theft for allegedly depriving Derek E. Postlewaite of a Bank of America Visa credit card with his consent on or about May 1.

Shortridge has pled not guilty to the charge and was released on his own recognizance under a $5,000 bond with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent secured.

His jury trial is scheduled for Dec. 3, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Brad E. Johnson, 29, 1443 McCormick Road, has been charged with one count of breaking and entering for allegedly trespassing on the land or premises of Brenda Amsbury with purpose to commit a felony on May 6.

Johnson pled not guilty to the charge and was released on his own recognizance under a $5,000 bond with an additional bond set at $1,000 ten percent secured.

His jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 24, 2008 at 9 a.m.

Cases recently resolved include:

Cornelius J. Rendell, 32, 1118 Cora Mill Road, was sentenced to two years of community control and ordered to forfeit $7,000 to the State Highway Patrol and the Gallia County Prosecutor's Office Law Enforcement Trust Fund on Friday following his guilty plea to possession of drugs, regarding 10 grams of crack cocaine, in court last month.

Rendell was further to obtain an evaluation by Spectrum Outreach Center, a six-month suspension of his operator's license, 500 hours of community service, with all but 60 hours hours stayed, register with Ohio Employment Services, pay $50 per month to the clerk of court for the duration of his probation, and pay all costs of the prosecution for judgment rendered.

Larry J. Gillenwater Sr., 51, 2384 Davis Road, Crown City, was sentenced to 11 months in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections after he was found guilty of committing several community control violations in court earlier this week.

After receiving evidence and testimony on Monday, the court entered a judgment of guilty for violations that include associating with a known felon, failing to report to his community control officer as ordered, possession of marijuana, and failure to pay court costs and supervisory fees as ordered.

Gillenwater was sentenced to 24 months community control after he pled guilty to insurance fraud in February 2007, though his initial indictment included aggravated arson and a second count of insurance fraud; the charges being in connection with a fire at Gillenwater's residence on July 13, 2005.
