MASON, W.Va. — Paul Somerville of Point Pleasant has taken the lead at the midway point of the 2008 Riverside Senior Men’s Golf League. Somerville has a total of 139 points to lead Carl Stone of Ripley by a mere one point.
Stone was absent from play on Tuesday and his lead evaporated in one week. In third place with 136 points is Mick Winebrenner of Racine.
A total of 81 players were on hand for the Tuesday play to make up 18 four-man teams and three three-man teams. This was a new single-day record for the league, with the old record being 78.
The low score of 10-under par 60 was shot by the winning team of Mick Winebrenner (Racine), Dick Dugan (Racine), Bob Hysell (Pomeroy) and Paul Somerville (Point Pleasant).
The second low round was a 63 (7-under par) and there was a three-way tie. The trio of Willis Korb (Guysville), Marvin Stafford (Letart) and Don Waldie (Point Pleasant) was one runner-up team.
The foursomes of Jim Gress (Letart), Ed Coon (New Haven), Don Wilson (Chester) and Bob Brooks (Ripley) — as well as Rusty Wood (New Haven), Bill Rainey (Point Pleasant), Claude Proffitt (Patriot) and Bill Winebrenner (Syracuse) — were the other second-place teams.
The closest to the pin winners were Chuck Stanley on the ninth hole and Benny Dent on No. 14.
