RIO GRANDE - The University of Rio Grande in collaboration with the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center (ESC), Gallia County Local Schools, Vinton County Local Schools and Wellston City Schools recently received a Science Seed Planning Grant from the Ohio Department of Education for $25,000.
Professional development for 75 science teachers in grades 3-8 will be planned to build on the current MSP (Math/Science Partnership) Project to expand content and laboratory opportunities beyond those available through the OSCI (Ohio Science Institute) Modules.
Based on a review of the districts' score reports for the Ohio Achievement Tests in science at grades 5 and 8, activities will specifically focus on professional development in scientific processes, earth and space sciences, physical sciences, and the related strand of informational text.
The Ohio Department of Education awarded 10 planning grants with no guarantee of receiving implementation funds.
“I am extremely grateful for the collaboration that has occurred between the University of Rio Grande and the local school districts to secure this seed planning grant,” said ESC Superintendent Dr. Denise Shockley. “Since we already have an established partnership for math and science professional development, I am optimistic that our final product will receive a favorable review by the Ohio Department of Education.
“With a possible four implementation grants to be awarded in the state, it shows the competitive nature of grant proposals,” she added.
