RIO GRANDE — The University of Rio Grande and the University of Charleston got together on the diamond on Wednesday afternoon in a make-up doubleheader with each team winning a game, just as it did in the season-opening double dip on March 2.
Rio won the first game, 4-1 and dropped the second game, 6-3.
It was a doubleheader in which Rio took advantage of opportunities in the first game while Charleston turned the trick in the night cap.
Rio Grande (21-11) scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Charleston (25-17) briefly tied the game with a run in the third inning.
Senior catcher Whitney Harless continued her tremendous senior campaign, going 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored. She doubled home the go-ahead in the fourth and hit a solo home run in the sixth.
Sophomore left fielder Leah Hamman went 1-for-2 with an RBI double and sophomore first baseman Mimi Mahon went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Senior pitcher Miranda Laws was brilliant, scattering seven hits and allowing one unearned run in seven innings. She fanned three and walked two. She improved to 13-4 on the season.
The second game loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Rio Grande.
Charleston didn’t waste any time scoring in the second game. Lead-off batter Michelle Sabelhaus hit the second pitch of the game over the left center field fence for a home run to the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. They would add another run to take 2-0 advantage.
UC scored three times in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Rio answered with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit in half. The Redwomen tied the game in the third at 2-2 with a single run. Mahon hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that senior center fielder Jessica Ross.
Rio scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth when Ross tripled to left field and subsequently scored on a single from freshman left fielder Kaci Dunn.
Ross went 4-for-4 to lead the offense and scored three runs. Dunn was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Sophia Young was victimized by four errors from her teammates. Young (8-7) went the distance, giving up eight hits and six runs (two earned) with five strikeouts. She did not walk a batter.
Stefanie Rossman pitched both games for UC.
“I thought our defense let us down, a couple of fly balls that really should have been caught in the second game, that was the difference,” said Rio Grande head coach David Pyles. “We get a bad hop at first base, bang-banger that kind of opens up that whole inning where they scored three runs. I’m not taking anything away from them, they’re a good team, they’re leading the West Virginia Conference and we’re in first place in the AMC so it was two good games, the way you’d expect out of two good ball teams.”
Rio Grande will get back into American Mideast Conference South Division play on Thursday with a doubleheader versus Mount Vernon Nazarene. Rio split with MVNU, April 5 at Stanley Evans Field.
