GALLIPOLIS — Exactly one week and two weather-related postponements later, Gallia Academy tennis finally took the court for its season opener against visiting Logan.
The end result proved to be worth the wait.
The Blue Devils started 2008 off on a good note Monday night with a 4-1 decision over the Chieftains in a non-divisional Southeastern Ohio Athletic League contest at Memorial Field.
The Blue and White posted victories in two of the three singles competitions, as well as both doubles contests to move to 1-0 overall this year. LHS fell to 0-2 overall.
Number one singles player Kamal Dayal had little trouble with Logan’s Josh Messmer as the junior claimed a straight-set 6-1, 6-2 decision. Senior Joan Sojka also breezed through her No. 2 singles match with ease during a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sam Miller.
In No. 1 doubles, the duo of junior Quinton Nibert and sophomore Jordan Cornwell handled Logan’s Joe Dennis and Kurt Geiger by a 6-0, 6-1 count. Sophomore Mollie Blake and junior Tim Huffman also won with relative ease in the No. 2 doubles match by posting a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Scott Poindexter and Dylan Kindinger.
The Purple and White’s lone victory came in No. 3 singles, as Shaun Ludwin needed three sets to eliminate sophomore Josh Jackson by a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 count.
Gallia Academy returns to action today when it travels to Chillicothe for its SEOAL South Division opener against the Cavaliers. Matches will start at 4:30 p.m.
