For the rock and jazz concerts, Dr. Chris Kenney, music department coordinator and ensemble director, took an unusual approach. The jazz concert will feature two complete albums by the legendary Miles Davis, “Kind of Blue” and “In a Silent Way,” performed in their entirety.
“It will be interesting,” said Kenney. “Miles pretty much showed the way for the next generation of jazz with each new album. He’s one of the most influential jazz artists if the 21st century.”
The two albums have very different styles, and a lot of improvisation is required.
“It’s challenging but at the same time they have more freedom,” said Kenney. “It allows them to be more creative.”
Rock ensemble members will host a concert of band favorites, since each member personally selected a tune for the group. Contemporary and classic songs by bands such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Clutch, The Who, Frank Zappa, Buckethead and Neil Young were selected by the students, who enjoy the idea of designing their own play list.
“I loved being able to pick our own songs,” said Bobby Sandlin, drums. “It was a cool process.”
“It’s going to be a nice, eclectic mix of styles,” said Nick Michael, vocals and guitar. “We’re going to play rock and roll from the early ‘60’s to today.”
“I’m getting to sing a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t normally sing,” said Nathan Wood, vocals and guitar. “It’s fun because it’s a challenge. I’m really excited about the Beatles songs.”
“We’ll be playing an interesting blend,” said Mark Ward, guitar. “We’ve got everything from Zeppelin to Radiohead and everything in between.”
“Words can’t describe it,” said Jacob Riddle, bass.
Other shows include senior recitals, symphonic band, Masterworks Chorale and Grande Chorale.
