Pyles win Chili Fest race, Fahmy takes women’s division

GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. resident and Rio Grande softball coach David Pyles won the second annual Gallipolis Chili Fest 5k Run on Sept. 8.

Pyles had a winning time of 18:33. Fred Jones was second (19:38) and Jerry Bostic third (19:42) overall.

Recent Gallia Academy graduate Carol Fahmy, of Bidwell, was the overall women’s winner in a time of 21:09. She was ninth overall in the 36-runner field. Sherry Lewis was the second woman (19th overall) to cross the finish line and Jessica Wade third (22nd overall).

Age group winners included Rich Haft (Male 50-59), Alan Horwitz (M 40-49), Chris Canaday (M 13-19), Frank Woodgard (M 60+), Brenda Scott (Female 40-49), Cheryl Greenlee (F 30-39) and Pat Frisco (F 50-59).

Paulette Richards was the oldest female to participate and 74-year-old Robert Fretwell was the oldest male.

In the Chilli Pepper Challenge, which combines eating hot peppers and chili while running one mile, Horwitz defended his title in record time of 10:08.

Sponsors for the event included Ron’s Trophies of Gallipolis and Wellston and Paul Davies Jewelers of Gallipolis. Gallipolis Education Association supplied traffic control.

Point Pleasant’s Todd Burris won a $200 sports watch from Paul Davies.
