Fall ballot deadline is Aug. 23
GALLIPOLIS — As a rule, elections held in odd-numbered years do not generate much excitement. But it’s a different story in Gallia County.
The Nov. 6 local election will feature races or candidates for one trustee and the fiscal officer in all 15 townships, mayor and two council seats in the five villages, two seats on the Gallipolis City Commission, three seats on the Gallipolis City Board of Education, two on the Gallia County Local Board of Education, and two representing districts in Gallia County on the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center Governing Board.
Fiscal officers are elected only in the villages of Centerville and Crown City since those individuals holding the same positions in Cheshire, Rio Grande and Vinton are appointed.
In the running for the two city commission seats are Samuel C. Davis, Joe G. Giles, Jon M. Lynch and Jeffrey J. O’Dell. Of the group, Giles is the only incumbent seeking election to a second term. The filing deadline for commission candidates was in April.
With the number of local offices appearing on this year’s ballot, interest has been seen in the election. Around 60 individuals, as of Tuesday, have taken out candidacy petitions, Elections Director Jeff Halley said.
The deadline to file for this fall’s election is 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.
Although filings for off-year elections tend to pour in as the deadline nears, a number of people have submitted their petitions to the Board of Elections. Those petitions are certified by the board following the deadline.
Among those who had filed petitions, as of Tuesday, were Charles Martin for trustee and Deborah L. Hughes for fiscal officer in Addison Township; Charles L. Barcus for trustee and Wanda K. Waugh for fiscal officer in Clay Township; Lloyd E. Danner for trustee and James R. Allen for fiscal officer in Gallipolis Township; James A. Bartels and Randall L. Hammond for trustee in Greenfield Township; Ronald Slone for trustee in Harrison Township; Dick Neal for trustee in Huntington Township; Randall Adkins for trustee in Morgan Township; and John E. Straight for trustee in Walnut Township.
Petitions filed so far for the Gallipolis City Board of Education were from five-term incumbent Dannie Greene and newcomer J.R. Sauer. No petitions had been returned for the Gallia County Local school board as of Tuesday.
And as of Tuesday, incumbent Vinton Mayor Samuel G. Sowards Jr. had filed his petition for reelection.
In 2008, all county offices except for one commissioner and the auditor will be on the ballot. Due to the presidential race, the local and state primary is March 4, and candidates for local office have until Jan. 4 to file their petitions.
