MERCERVILLE — A Guyan Township trustee currently facing felony theft in office charges, now faces assault charges in the Gallipolis Municipal Court after allegedly attacking a resident following the Guyan Township trustee meeting Monday night.

Roger A. Watson, 9542 Ohio 218, Crown City was arraigned on Tuesday on one count of assault after he allegedly repeatedly punched resident Charles Gatewood, 58, 24272 Ohio 7 South, Crown City, outside of the township building on Ohio 218.

According to the report, Gatewood asked Watson to step down from office until the grand jury case against him is completed. Following the meeting, Watson allegedly shoved Gatewood off the ramp outside the township building and repeatedly punched him while he was on the ground. After Gatewood was able to get up, Watson allegedly punched him one more time.

Gatewood suffered an upper lip injury, injury to his left eye and knots on the left side of his head, according to the report.

Several witnesses who tried to break up the fight were also allegedly threatened by Watson.

Watson, who has served as trustee for 18 years, was indicted on March 23 by the Gallia County grand jury on one count of theft in office for allegedly using the services of Gallia County Jail inmates and a man performing public service due to receiving benefits from Gallia County Department of Job and Family Services for personal gain.

Watson’s theft in office trial is tentatively set for Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at 9 a.m.

A court pretrial has been set for Tuesday, June 26 at 8:45 a.m. in the Gallipolis Municipal Court for the assault charge.
