IRONTON — Gallia Academy beat Ironton. Ironton beat Gallia Academy.
But Ironton’s victory on Monday was more impressive, thus the Fighting Tigers will get the chance to play for the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League tennis championship on Thursday.
Ironton won 4-1 on Monday — trumping the Blue Devils’ more narrow 3-2 victory last week. Both teams share the South Division title, but it’s the Tigers who get the shot at the whole thing. The Tigers will face North Division champion Athens, while Gallia will play host to Logan in the third-place contest.
Like the last meeting, Ironton won the top two singles matches, but Ironton also won both double matches — which made the difference.
Ironton’s Lovelle Metcalf shutout Joan Sojka at first singles, as did teammate Rob Downs over Mollie Blake at No. 2 singles. The lone Blue Devil victory came at third singles where Greg Baker was a convincing straight sets winner (6-3, 6-1) over J.C. Kinney.
The Fighting Tiger also won the doubles matches in straight sets. Austin Cornett and Demetrius Givens beat the team of Quint Nibert and Adam Blake 7-6, 6-3 at first singles. Meanwhile, Seth Christian and Joey Pauley were 6-2, 6-3 winners over Kamal Dayal and Tim Huffman.
Gallia Academy’s Saul McGuire and Kegan Angel were winners in exhibition play.
The Blue Devils go to Point Pleasant today. The SEOAL Day of Champions match-ups are Thursday.
