Angels tie for title in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - Lauren Adkins won both individual distance races, and Kara Jackson set a new meet record, as the Gallia Academy High School girls track and field team won the Russ Parsons Invitational on Saturday.

But the Blue Angels weren't the only ones, host Parkersburg and Akron Buchtel scored 122 points along with Gallia Academy - creating a three-way tie for the team championship.

Adkins won the 1600-meters in a time of 5:32.19, six seconds before her nearest competitor. She also won the 3200 meters in a time of 11:28.04 - way ahead of second-place Emmy Moore of Parkersburg.

Jackson ran the 400-meters in a record time of 58.38 seconds, erasing the record set by former Blue Angel Kayla Perry last season.

The Blue Angels also took first in two other events. The 4x100-meter relay team of Brea Close, Tonia Logan, Jackson and Alexis Geiger won in a time of 51.17 seconds; also Geiger won the long jump by gliding 17-03.5 through the air.

Sophie Wagner was the meet's high scorer on the girls side with 28 points, helping Marietta to a fourth-place showing with 94 points. Parkersburg South (74) was fifth and Eastern (11) sixth.

The Lady Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team, a state qualifier last season, took second for Eastern's highest finish on the day. In the 400-meter individual event, Eastern picked up a a lot of points as Becca Owen was fifth, Erin Weber seventh and Alyssa Newland eighth.

Hudson High won the boys championship with 178 points, way ahead of runner-up Marietta (99). Akron Buchtel was third (87) followed by Parkersburg (78), Parkersburg South (71), Gallia Academy (21) and Eastern (14).

Alex Ables was the top performer for the Blue Devils, taking second in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 200. Gallia Academy scored much of its points in relay events and Demetrius Garnes was eighth in the shot put.

Eastern distance star Michael Owen placed second in the 3200-meter run while teammate Keith Aeiker was eighth in that same event. The Eagles were also fourth in the 4x800-meter relay and Zack Newell threw seventh farthest in the discus.
