MERCERVILLE - South Gallia High School students will take to the school stage this weekend with their production of the popular musical comedy “Bye Bye Birdie.”

A cast of 20 people, in addition to numerous individuals working behind the scenes, will bring to life to the Michael Stewart-Charles Strouse-Lee Adams concoction that made a star of Dick VanDyke in the original stage version and the 1963 film adaptation in which he co-starred with Ann-Margret and Paul Lynde.

“Bye Bye Birdie” relates the panic that follows when pop star Conrad Birdie (based on Elvis Presley) is drafted into the Army. It's a black day for his (mostly) female fans, but represents a disaster for Conrad's producer, Albert Peterson, who's built his entire business around Conrad.

In an effort to recoup any losses during Conrad's stretch in the military, Albert and his devoted secretary Rosie Alvarez arrange for Conrad to meet with the president of one his fan clubs, Kim MacAfee, in Sweet Apple, Ohio, and have the event captured on TV's “The Ed Sullivan Show” - much to the consternation of her parents, who sing one of the show's most memorable tunes, “Kids.”

Albert is played by Garrett Robinson, while Rosie is enacted by Cyndi Sanders. Kim is portayed by Ashley Miller and Justin Shelton is Conrad.

The SGHS production is under the direction of second-year English teacher Ann Bryson, who said the experience has been enjoyable.

“They are a really good group,” she said of her cast and crew. “As crazy as it gets now, they have worked hard and I think this show will be a success.”

Others in the cast include Dakota Stapleton (Harry MacAfee), Amber Miller (Doris MacAfee), Samantha Taylor (Mae Peterson), Jacob Crews (Randolph MacAfee), Mychael Barker (Hugo Peterson), Shay Crews (Ursula Merkle), Rachel Merry (Gloria/Rasputin/Teen Chorus), Jacob Watson (Harvey Johnson/Mayor/Teen Chorus), Craig Romaine (Mr. Johnson/Ed Sullivan's voice/Teen Chorus), Megan Daines (Maude/Quartet/Teen Chorus/Alice), Ashley Waugh (Mrs. Merkle/Quartet/Nancy), Nakita Fitzpatrick (Sad Girl/Quartet/Teen Chorus/Helen), Katie Lawrence (Quartet/Teen Chorus/Margie), Megan Thomas (Penelope/Teen Chorus), Jay Stapleton (Policeman/Train Conductor/Teen Chorus) and Danielle Hopper (Mayor's Wife/Sad Girl/Teen Chorus).

“Bye Bye Birdie” will be performed Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. Admission is $3 per person.
