LOGAN — At least it’s not considered a league match anymore.
The two-time defending Southeastern Ohio Athletic League champion Gallia Academy Blue Devils stumbled out of the block in the high school tennis opener Tuesday, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Logan Chieftains.
The two teams are in separate divisions, and only matches against those in your own division count in the standings.
Gallia Academy’s lone victory came at second doubles, where the pairing of Quint Nibert and Kamal Dayal won in three sets over Josh Messmer and Shawn Ludwin by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In singles play it was Logan’s Florian Furstner beating Gallia’s Adam Blake 6-0, 6-1 at first singles; Logan’s Sam Miller over Joan Sojka 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 6-4; and Kyle Kennard defeating Gallia Academy’s Greg Baker 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Brian Carlson and Joel Kennedy of Logan were 6-4, 6-4 winners over Tim Huffman and Saul McGuire at second doubles.
Gallia Academy goes to Minford today.
