POMEROY — A Bidwell man has been charged with aggravated robbery, grand theft auto and two traffic violations after he crashed his own car and then allegedly stole two vehicles at gunpoint on Tuesday.
Benjamin M. Haney, 26, Bidwell, was charged with aggravated robbery and grand theft auto, first and fourth-degree felonies, respectively, failure to control and failure to stop after an accident, in Meigs County Court.
Haney is charged with stealing a 2005 Toyota truck from Charles Casto, Sr. of Albany, at gunpoint. A news release from the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office said Casto offered Haney assistance after Haney crashed his own vehicle on Ohio 689.
According to the release, Casto acted as a “good Samaritan,” who stopped to see if Haney needed help after he crashed his car. After commandeering Casto’s vehicle, Haney then allegedly crashed the truck on U.S. 50/32 in Athens County, and stole another vehicle at gunpoint from another woman who was not identified. He was apprehended by a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in the third vehicle.
Haney is charged in Athens County with aggravated robbery and failure to comply with a traffic signal, and is being held in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville on the Athens County charges.
