GALLIPOLIS - When you are not hitting foul shots, not much of anything else matters.

Despite having several opportunities in the second half to close the gap, the Gallia Academy Blue Angels could not get it done at the foul line as Fairland ran away with a 42-33 victory Thursday night in Gallipolis.

The latest setback puts Gallia Academy 3-11 on the season.

The Blue Angels got as close as four in the fourth quarter after falling behind early, but each time fell short at the charity stripe. Gallia Academy shot 2-of-9 in the final eight minutes and were 29 percent (5-of-17) in the game.

Fairland, on the other hand, spent most of the night shooting foul shots with half of its points coming at the line. The Lady Dragons shot 60 percent (24-of-40) in the game including 11-of-20 down the stretch.

But foul shooting was not the only flaw for the Blue Angels as they, at times, had trouble crossing midcourt. A tough press by Fairland forced numerous steals and turnovers and gave the visitors a chance to put the game away late.

Fairland was led by Shea Berry with 13 points and Molly Bumgardner with 12 in the victory. Megan Auxier added eight points, Mackenzi Rucker had five points and Erika Smoot and Christin Capper had two points each.

Having trouble hitting anything outside, Lindsey Niday led the Lady Angels with 11 points scored mainly in the post. Rachel Jones added eight points, Ryann Lesie had five points, Alexis Geiger had four points, Brittany Elliott and Kimber Davis had two points each and Amy Noe had a point.

Fairland took the quick lead after one quarter 10-8, but Gallia Academy fought back and made it a one-point game early in the second quarter. But once again the Lady Dragons were able to pull away while the Blue and White had trouble hitting shots, giving Fairland a 23-15 advantage at the half.

Gallia Academy did fight back in the third, outscoring Fairland by two, but that did not matter as the visitors pulled away late.

The Blue Angels will return to the court Saturday when Zanesville comes to Gallipolis.
