GALLIPOLIS — Parishioners and members of the community joined together to celebrate the dedication of the Bob Saunders Sports Complex in the First Church of God with a day of worship and thanksgiving.

The project began when the congregation decided that they wanted to build a new church and community center that would benefit the community. After almost five years of planning and construction, the 2,000 square foot structure is now complete.

The congregation toured the beautiful church facility as the chandelier, church entrance sign, landscaping, steeple, fountain, baptistery, stained glass window and other generously donated items were dedicated.

The Family Life Center is equipped for many events. It features a kitchen, daycare rooms and offices. The stage at the Family Life Center can be used for dramatic and musical performances, with a seating capacity of 650.

Master of ceremonies Buddy Moore spoke to the crowd as they gathered for the dedication of the complex. He explained that the multi-purpose room acts as a basketball court, volleyball court, and a place to hold fellowship activities and games.

Following a video presentation filled with snapshots, Karen Moore captivated the audience with her tearful rendition of “Beulah Land,” Bob Saunders’ favorite song.

“He was a good man and he took care of everybody,” said Karen Moore. “He was a mentor and a supporter for coaches, kids, and parents.”

Buddy Moore added, “I know that if Bob is looking down on us, he would be proud of the words that were spoken of him today. He would be proud because this building will actually benefit so many people. His life was about benefiting others. He was just the best.”

After the building was officially dedicated, a plaque was unveiled, and those in attendance enjoyed a special dedication dinner.

“This is a great tribute to him,” said Jean Saunders. “He loved sports and he loved family. Thank you all for coming. God bless you all.”
