TUPPERS PLAINS - Saint Marys certainly looked the part of the number-five ranked Single-A team in West Virginia.

The Blue Devils (4-0) converted five Eastern turnovers into 29 points and rolled to a 43-to-16 win over the Eagles on Friday.

Saint Marys' Derek Barnhart picked off a pass on the first play of the game and returned the interception 54 yards for the game's first touchdown just 23 seconds into the contest.

Logan Venderlic recovered a Derek Young fumble at the Eagles 18-yard line to set the table for the next Blue Devil TD. Five plays later, Shawn Robinson scored from a yard out to put Saint Marys up 12-0 with 9:02 remaining.

Another interception led to another Blue Devil score. Corey Cronin returned the pick 41 yards for the touchdown that pushed Saint Marys' lead to 19-0 at the 7:54 mark of the first period.

Eastern went three-and-out on its next possession, and following a short punt, Saint Marys set up shop at the Eagles' 22. The Blue Devils pounded the ball down to the 1-yard line on a pass and two runs. From there Barnhart found Venderlic wide open in the back of the end zone to extend the Blue Devil lead to 26-0 with 3:52 to play in the opening quarter.

Barnhart and Venderlic hooked up for another score in the second quarter following yet another Eastern turnover. Venderlic picked off a Mike Johnson pass at the Blue Devil 25 to snuff out a good drive by the Eagles.

It took just five plays for Saint Marys to cover the 75 yards for the score. Venderlic hauled in a 30-yard pass from Barnhart to pad the lead at 33-0 with 4:03 left in the half.

Eastern's next turn on offense ended with a fumble by Chadd Whitlatch at the Blue Devil 49. Robinson recovered for Saint Marys and returned the ball to the Eastern 41.

Barnhart completed two pass plays to move the ball to the Eastern 15, where the drive stalled. Logan Bennett kicked a 32-yard field goal with four seconds left to run the Blue Devil lead to 36-0 at the half.

The second half saw Saint Marys give its second- and third-team players ample opportunity to get some experience.

Blue Devil back-up running back Ryan Fickiesen took full advantage of his chance for playing time, scoring on a 60-yard run on the first play of the second half to push the Saint Marys lead to 43-0.

Eastern (0-4) answered three minutes later when Codey Gerlach found the end zone on a 37-yard run with 8:29 to play. That cut the deficit to 43-8.

Whitlatch scored on a 1-yard run with 2:41 left in the final period to round out the scoring for the Eagles.

Gerlach led all ball carriers with 72 yards on 19 carries. Whitlatch rushed for 49 yards.

Fickiesen was the top ground-gainer for Saint Marys with 65 yards on just two carries.

Barnhart was 5-of-10 for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Venderlic caught two balls for 31 yards and two scores.

Eastern couldn't capitalize on five Saint Marys turnovers. The Blue Devils lost four fumbles and Eastern's Derek Young picked off a pass by Blue Devil back-up quarterback Austin Flowers.

Eastern travels to Belpre next week, still in search of its first win of the season. The Golden Eagles are 1-and-3 following a 21-7 loss to Federal Hocking on Friday.

Saint Marys will try to keep its unbeaten streak intact when the Blue Devils travel to Van next week.
