POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. - West Virginia has added another historical marker sign in Mason County.
The West Virginia Division of Archives and History has placed a historical sign at the site of the Silver Bridge Collapse Memorial.
“This is an important stop for the tourists,” Mayor Jim Wilson said of the memorial. “When people come to visit, this is what people want to come and see.”
Around 5 p.m. on Dec. 15, 1967, as rush-hour traffic was crossing the Silver Bridge between Point Pleasant and Kanauga, Ohio, an eye-beam gave way, causing the bridge to fall into the Ohio River.
Nine people were injured and 44 died in the accident. Two of the victims were never recovered from the river.
“People need to understand that the bridge was here,” Wilson said. “This is just a nice piece that adds to the history of Mason County.”
The sign is just one of many in the county that emphasizes the historical events that occurred in the area.
Other signs include two in front of the Mason County Courthouse that give a brief history of Point Pleasant, Mason County, West Virginia and Ohio. There are also markers that tell of the Battle of Point Pleasant, and one about the first doctor who performed a Caesarian section in the United States back in the 1700s.
The new sign has been placed toward the side of the memorial.
Wilson said that before the sign is encased in concrete, he is waiting for the public to respond about the placement of Point Pleasant's newest marker.
