“It's been a long journey filled with so many memories,” said Alicia Calvert, who joined classmates Elizabeth Buck, Bridget Merry and Kayla Perry in the student addresses during Friday's GAHS graduation at Lyne Center on the campus of the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College.
“We have worked so hard to make it to this moment, and this moment and others are what we will remember from senior year,” Calvert added.
Utilizing a connecting narrative in their addresses, the speakers touched on the defining moments of their final year at GAHS, when many things - assigned parking, single lockers, defeating Jackson in football for homecoming and most importantly, passing a bond issue for a new high school - became a reality.
“This is it. All of the hard work and dedication have come down to this,” said Perry. “We will never forget our experiences, and while realizing that a door is closing, another door is opening up for us.”
In recognitions prior to the awarding of diplomas to the class's 163 graduates, Principal Bruce Wilson announced ther academic key winners for 2006.
The outstanding senior in science is Ross Brubaker, while Calvert and Perry share the outstanding senior in mathematics honor. Merry was named the outstanding senior in English and Jeff Smith was chosen the outstanding senior in social studies.
Maggie Roach was named the outstanding senior in music, and the outstanding seniors in athletics are Felicia Close (female) and Shaphen Robinson (male).
