Ancient York Lodge #33 to sponsor event

GALLIPOLIS — The Ancient York Lodge #33 is resurrecting a tradition started nearly 40 years ago this weekend. The organization will hold a Community Day event on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the corner of Spruce Street and Third Ave., Gallipolis, Ohio. Although some of the activities planned for the event are more in line with the 21st Century than the original community picnics held by the organization in the mid-1970s, the spirit of faith and community that prompted the Lodge to plan those events is still going strong.

Aside from fostering a sense of cohesiveness and community, the main goal of the Ancient York Lodge #33 event is to provide free school supplies for children in attendance.

“Donations from generous individuals and area business have made this goal possible,” said Lodge representative Jim Gilmore, Jr., WM.

Several activities are planned for kids and adults, alike. Kids will enjoy inflatables, games and prizes while adults can take advantage of a silent auction, free food and a gospel concert performance by local group Ordinary People, which begins at 6 p.m. Money raised from the silent auction will be used toward a gift and food drive during the holidays.

Gilmore said that the Lodge will also have speakers to present information on the history of the organization for those interested. Door prizes will be presented at the end of the evening.

“We are just trying to reach out to our community,” said Gilmore.
