GALLIPOLIS FERRY, W.Va. - Human remains have been found in a remote part of Mason Co., W.Va., and investigators are now faced with the task of sorting out the mystery.

Sgt. E.B. Starcher, of the Mason County Detachment of the West Virginia State Police, confirmed that the remains of at least one person were found Sunday evening around 8:30 p.m. just off of Duncan Creek Road, in Gallipolis Ferry. Investigators cannot yet confirm whether or not they have discovered more than one body or whether the confirmed body is male or female.

Starcher said that the West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Team and Mason County Sheriff's Office are currently on site. Forensic specialists from Washington, D.C. are expected tomorrow.

“We’re just securing the scene and waiting for them to get here tomorrow afternoon,” said Starcher.

According to the West Virginia State Police, the remains were discovered when a group of people hunting arrowheads in the woods came upon them.

Once the scene has been processed, the remains will be sent the the West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office.
