The free show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 4 and will be held at Gallipolis City Park. River Rec runs July 1-4 at the city park and along the Gallipolis riverfront.
This year’s guest artist will be Grammy-nominated harpist Deborah Henson-Conant. She straps on a custom-made electric harp and dances, sings and plays everything from funk to folk, jazz to flamenco, classical to Celtic and puts on a most unusual and exhilarating show.
For Ray Fowler, the OVS music director, Henson-Conant was an obvious choice.
“This is a person who will reach right into the heart and soul of the audience,” he said. “She’s just so natural on stage.”
It’s more than showmanship, he continued.
“I was so impressed with how thoughtful she was about her choice of pieces,” Fowler said. “She wanted to choose just the right repertoire to reach our audience.”
Henson-Conant will return to the tri-county to open the 2011-2012 OVS season on Oct. 8 with a show at Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School’s Wedge Auditorium.
The free concert on July 4 will feature many favorite patriotic tunes and the “1812 Overture” to wrap up the evening’s performance.
The annual fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m.
