According to the State Division of Fire Marshal, Travis Janey, 20, is facing charges of aggravated arson and aggravated burglary. Investigators are consulting with the Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office regarding the case and said the charges could be upgraded.
Deputies from the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office arrested Janey at 10 a.m. Sunday at Holzer Medical Center. He is being held in the Gallia County Jail.
According to the sheriff’s website, Janey was scheduled to appear in Gallipolis Municipal Court on Monday to face charges in several unrelated cases.
The Gallipolis Volunteer Fire Department responded to the apartment complex located at 381 Buck Ridge Road at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15. The fire was contained to a second-floor bedroom of unit 99. The remainder of the second floor sustained heat and smoke damage, according to a report issued by the fire marshal. There are six units in that wing of the complex.
Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the State Division of Fire Marshal, said investigators discovered evidence that the fire was intentionally set, thus ruling out any accidental causes. Cartmill said since the case is still under investigation and it has been deemed an arson fire, no other details about the blaze will be released at this time.
