POINT PLEASANT, W. Va. — In one final tuneup prior to today’s regional championship games, Wahama and Point Pleasant picked each other up as an added softball bout on Tuesday.
And, like the first two meetings, the contest went the way of host Point Pleasant, which blanked the White Falcons 8-0 to win all three of their matchups this season.
The Lady Knights notched three runs apiece in the first and third innings, then tacked on two more in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.
The contest was called following the fifth inning with West Virginia’s eight-run mercy rule after five.
With the win, Point Pleasant pushed forth for its 24th win with nine losses, and officially surpassing last season’s win total.
The White Falcons fell to 18-10 with the loss.
Point Pleasant pitchers Karissa Cochran and Karson Bonecutter combined for a one-hit, one-walk shutout, as Cochran worked the opening four frames for the win while striking out eight.
Of her 53 total pitches, 37 went for strikes — as the only Wahama baserunners were an Emily VanMetre two-out walk in the third followed by an Ashton Russell leadoff single in the fourth.
Cochran struck out the first two White Falcons, followed by the side 1-2-3 in the second and the opening batter of the third.
She then fanned the final two as Russell reached second on a Taylor Warden groundout.
Warden grounded out to third for the final out of the first, and Taylor McGrew popped out to second for the second out in the third.
Cochran also had a defensive assist, inducing a groundball back to her by Rachel Roque.
Bonecutter pitched the fifth, striking out the first batter before a groundout to second and a flyout to left.
McGrew threw the opening three innings for Wahama, allowing six runs on seven hits — although only half of those half-dozen runs were earned.
Cynthia Hendricks tossed the fourth and fifth, allowing the final two PPHS runs in the fourth.
Both Wahama hurlers struck out one, as the Lady Knights banged out 10 hits with two White Falcon errors.
And, those miscues provided the Point Pleasant spark at the plate.
With two outs in the first, Cochran singled before Leah Cochran reached on an error — and the first run scored.
Kelsie Byus then doubled, setting up a two-run single by Tanner King for the 3-0 lead.
After a 1-2-3 second stanza, the Lady Knights plated three more runs on four more hits in the third.
Makinley Higginbotham singled to lead off, then consecutive one-out singles by Leah Cochran, Byus and King crossed the next two runs.
Kelsey Price then had an RBI to score Byus.
In the fourth, with one out, Michaela Cottrill and Higginbotham doubled and singled respectively, followed by Karissa Cochran clubbing a two-run double.
The White Falcons face host Williamstown today (Thursday, May 19) in the Class A Region 4 championship at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Knights, meanwhile, will host defending Class AAA state champion Hurricane today in that Region 4 title tilt at 6 p.m.
